The LP/CD series “Great Women Of Song”, to be released in 2024, brings color to the record collection, with the iconic female singers of the Verve label and their most important tracks, as an attractively designed, colorful edition. The track selection is expertly chosen and has fans and newcomers alike in its sights. All episodes have been newly remastered. Ella Fitzgerald, who is still remembered around the world as “The First Lady of Song”, was also the First Lady of Verve Records – the label that jazz impresario and producer Norman Granz, who was also Ella’s manager, launched in 1956 basically especially for her. This compilation brings together Ella’s most popular recordings. Accompanied by the best orchestras and instrumental soloists of the time, Ella interprets timeless songs by some of the greatest American composers of the 20th century. Like her idol Billie Holiday, Carmen McRae had the ability to make a ballad completely her own. At the same time, however, she also knew how to swing as brilliantly as her other great role model, Ella Fitzgerald. The singer, who grew up in the bebop era, made a series of recordings for Decca Records in the 1950s – sometimes with smaller ensembles, sometimes with studio orchestras – which cemented her reputation as a uniquely witty interpreter. This collection contains her best recordings from this period, including a song with Sammy Davis Jr. as a duet partner. |
