Schubert composed his two great piano trios in B flat D898 and E flat D929, as well as the lovely Notturno D897, at the height of his powers, shortly before he died aged 31. These works express both the melancholy of farewell and the elation of musicmaking, the melodies as exhilarating as any he created.
