Philip Glass: String Quartet No. 9 ‘King Lear’ & String Quartet No. 8

The Tana Quartet here presents the premiere recording of Glass’ String Quartet No. 9. Similar to String Quartet No. 2, the composer here uses material previously created for a play score: namely, the new work is based on his music for the acclaimed Broadway production of Shakespeare’s King Lear by acclaimed director Sam Gold. The 2018 8th String Quartet, with its various layers of sound and contrasting timbres and rhythms, complements this remarkable recording by the young French quartet.
