When Bobby Hutcherson recorded “Total Eclipse” for Blue Note in 1968, he was already one of the label’s style icons. The album documented the vibraphonist’s first recording with tenor saxophonist and flutist Harold Land, whose round, reverb-rich tone contrasted attractively with the cool, intellectual post-bop that Hutcherson’s quintet played here.
