“Byrd’s Eye View” was recorded in 1955 for Tom Wilson’s Transition label and was the first album released by Donald Byrd as a bandleader. The trumpeter fronted The Jazz Messengers with Hank Mobley, Horace Silver, Doug Watkins and Art Blakey as well as trumpeter Joe Gordon on several tracks. Donald Byrd – trumpet / Hank Mobley – tenor saxophone / Horace Silver – piano / Doug Watkins – bass / Art Blakey – drums / Joe Gordon – trumpet Reviews “A Jazz Messengers session released under Donald Byrd’s name, “Byrd’s Eye View,” shows the young trumpeter at the full extent of his ability…. despite the length and scope of the pieces, Byrd remains in full control and plays with an authority and technical skill that belies his age. An excellent hard bop date” (allmusic) |
