Detailed Presentation
The Cherubini Quartet, considered one of the most remarkable string quartets in Europe, was founded in Düsseldorf in 1978 under the auspices of the Amadeus Quartet and Sándor Végh. It has performed in prestigious concert halls in the United States and Europe, received several international awards and signed an exclusive contract with EMI Classics in 1988. The quartet disbanded in 1997, so this box represents a virtual tour of its entire musical legacy. The box also contains the recordings that the members of the quartet made separately for EMI Classics as instrumentalists. Reviews “Their gripping approach and wonderfully straightforward style of music-making are particularly impressive; although they tend to shy away from subtle fiddling, they do not neglect the subtle play with themes and motifs. The quartet attaches great importance to dynamic gradations and makes the differences between forte and fortissimo appear clear.the Cherubinis teamed up with Christian Zacharias for the piano, and he doesn’t hammer the strings mercilessly into the ground – like so many egocentric representatives of his profession – but rather convinces with a sense of work and teamwork. And the way the five musicians conjure up the despair close to madness in the funeral march of the second movement inevitably sweeps me away.” (HiFiVision on Schumann) “Once again, vitality and radiance can be heard, yearning foreboding and brilliance with absolute equality of all voices. For this reason, it surpasses even the truly outstanding complete recording of the Bartholdy Quartet, also because moods are created more imaginatively without ever abandoning the music. Reference!” (stereoplay on Mendelssohn) “The Düsseldorf Cherubini Quartet chooses its tempi sensibly, builds on clear articulation and cultivates an interpretative style that savors the refinement of the character movements to the full. Nothing becomes monotonous.” (HiFiVision on Haydn) |
