Luminous sound surfaces and sensuous orchestral colours are not regarded as an essential characteristic of French music for nothing. Its history offers great names who are famous for their art of instrumentation and sensitive timbre design. The composers of the cello concertos on this recording are among them: Camille Saint-Saëns, whose instrumentation technique always combines colourfulness with transparency, Édouard Lalo, who was held in high esteem by Claude Debussy for the richness of colour in his works, and Arthur Honegger, who was able to paint effective sound pictures even without a large orchestra, not only in his Cello Concerto. It is often the subtle shadings and careful transitions that distinguish the timbre of French music and account for its delightful charm.

On his latest album “Four Visions of France” with the DSO Berlin and Alexandre Bloch, Daniel Müller-Schott – Opus Klassik Prize winner 2019 – delightfully juxtaposes five works from this kaleidoscope of sound.
