Edition for the 95th birthday of Wolfgang Sawallisch Born in Munich on 26 August 1923, died in Grainau on 22 February 2013, the name Wolfgang Sawallisch stands worldwide, but especially in his native city, for a type and generation of conductor and musician in the music world that no longer exists As a tribute to Sawallisch’s 95th birthday, the ORFEO label is releasing all his recordings with the maestro – starting with Nilsson’s Isolde premiere under Sawallisch in 1958, the famous Dutchman with London and Rysanek in 1959, through the recordings (esp. of Mozart, Wagner, Strauss) from his time at the Bavarian State Opera from 1971 to 1992, Sawallisch’s appearances as an outstanding pianist of chamber music or as Lied accompanist (among others of Fischer-Dieskau, Prey or Margaret Price), up to the digital studio recordings with symphonic repertoire of Bruckner, Pfitzner and Weber and the Brahms Requiem, remarkably with the “colleagues” of the BR Symphony Orchestra.
