Ella Fitzgerald – Back In Berlin! A completely unreleased Berlin concert of the First Lady of Jazz! Ella and Berlin will remain connected for all eternity through a concert she gave in 1960 in the Deutschlandhalle in front of an enthusiastic audience. Ella’s producer, Verve founder Norman Granz, had the delightful habit of recording the most important live performances of his artist. Many of these appeared on LP, but others disappeared forever in the archives. The recording of the Berlin concert was released in the same year as a Verve LP under the title “Mack The Knife” and became one of the artist’s greatest successes to date The wish for “more Ella in Berlin” was always great, but remained unfulfilled. Until now, because it is only now that a complete further Berlin concert recording of the great Ella has been discovered in Norman Granz’s private estate – a concert that can compete with its famous predecessor in every respect: Ella swings with Paul Smith – piano, Wilfred Middlebrooks – bass, Stan Levey – drums, recorded at Sportpalast Berlin on 25 March 1962 |
