With “Soulville”, Ben Webster released an exemplary album in 1957, which showed him to be a sensitive yet incredibly expressive tenor saxophonist. At the time of the recording, Webster was already regarded internationally as one of the “elder statesmen” of jazz. But the youthful fire that had characterized his playing in the Duke Ellington Orchestra two decades earlier was far from extinguished.
