Pure duo albums, in which Ella Fitzgerald was accompanied only by a pianist, are an absolute rarity in the extensive discography of the “First Lady Of Song” (which according to some counts includes over 200 recordings). After recording two such albums with Ellis Larkins in the early 1950s, Ella did not return to this particularly intimate format until 1960 on “Let No Man Write My Epitaph” with Paul Smith. The result was a masterpiece of extraordinary emotional depth. Verve Acoustic Sounds series: mastered entirely in analog by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound from the original tapes, QPR pressing (180 g), sturdy tip-on gatefold (Stoughton Printing), padded inner sleeve. |
