Although there had already been isolated performances of Italian operas in France, it was not until 1646 that Cardinal Mazarin commissioned Orfeo by Luigi Rossi, the first stage work composed especially for Paris. First performed in 1647 with enormous pomp (over 200 men were only busy working on the scenery), Orfeo was a tremendous triumph for Rossi. Nevertheless, the exorbitant costs of about 500,000 Écus Mazarin and the court were to cause some trouble with the following front. Elena Sartori and her ensemble Allabastrina and specialized singers present an extremely lively and engaging recording of this important opera. |
