In his production for the Gran Teatre del Liceu, director Calixto Bieito has stripped away almost all superfluous details and characters, and so the drama focuses entirely on the main characters, intensifying everything they reveal about themselves through their music. The simple set design with the oversized Osborne bull underlines the irony of fate that the most famous and popular of all “Spanish” operas was created by a Frenchman who, because of his early death, could not even enjoy the great success of this masterpiece himself. How wonderful that the recording of this outstanding production is now available on DVD and Blu-ray.. |
