Ferdinand Ries belonged to a generation of symphonists who have been neglected, understandably but wrongly, in the annals of music history. The public of the first half of the nineteenth century had elevated Beethoven’s symphonies to the norm by which all contemporaneous — and subsequent – works of the genre were measured. Ries, who also was on very close personal terms with Beethoven as his student and assistant, had a difficult time emerging from the giant’s shadow. But he had the necessary skill and talent to do so, and Schumann’s neue zeitschrift für musik wrote even after his death, »Even if his symphonies cannot stand comparison with Beethoven’s gigantic flights of imagination, they nevertheless will always belong to the best that more recent and most recent times have brought forth in this genre.« This judgment is more than confirmed by the four CDs containing all eight of his symphonies, which have found their ideal interpreters in the Zurich Chamber Orchestra under Howard Griffiths. More powerful »Beethovian« symphonic music was truly not written by any other composer of the times!

Reviews

BBC Music Magazine 2 / 99: »These are inventive works, attractive if naive melodically performed here with energy and passion.«

American Record Guide 6 / 01: »Like Volume 1, this is beautifully played, set forth with spirit and sympathy. And it benefits from crisp and detailed sonics that permit you to savor every turn of phrase. I certainly hope we won’t hve to wait another year for the next installment, as the two at hand are splendid in every way.«

The Sunday Times 22.02.04: »These are convincing performances.« Fermate 1 / 199: »Appealing symphonic music because of its unused sound, winning with its vital and energetic interpretation.«
