Ferdinand Ries: Piano Trios – Mendelssohn Trio Berlin

In addition to all of the symphonies, cpo is releasing more and more selected chamber music by Ferdinand Ries, giving the composer a new appreciation and justice. This month we release his substantial piano trios opp. 2 & 143. Boldly and constrastfully set compositions with a wealth of deftly crafted detail. While classically kept with the movement sequence fast-slow-fast – the piano is also at the center of the action as in the trio of the Classical period – there is nevertheless a definite romantic and lyrical atmosphere that is especially evident in the later and more mature Piano Trio op. 143. The delicate and demanding piano part is a reminder that Ries himself was an excellent pianist. A critic of the time: “Mr. Ries is rightly celebrated as one of the finest piano players of our time.
