Lou Harrison’s musical style was influenced by the San Francisco of the 1930s. He studied with Henry Cowell composition and played top-notch percussion concerts with John Cage. The year 1942-43 he spent in Los Angeles, where he worked with Arnold Schoenberg studied. In 1946 Harrison conducted the premiere of Ives’ Third Symphony, which he had adapted from the score. In the following year Ives was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for his work with Harrison

During his travels to Japan, Korea and Taiwan 1961-62 he studied the local instruments, including Cheng and P’iri. Back to California, he enthusiastically presented concerts and lectures about Korean and Chinese music and experimented in his own work with mixed instrumental ensembles. In 1975 Harrison began with an intensive study of traditional javanese gamelan techniques. A short time later, he continued with the concept of crossing different musical Cultures and adapted the concerto principle to the Indonesian orchestra by playing works with gamelan and Accompaniment for western solo artists

These four CDs present a complete collection of his works from the beginning of the 1990s recorded works.
