Chamber Orchestra of Europe (Ορχήστρα)Nikolaus Harnoncourt (Μαέστρος)

This set is a testament to the remarkable collaboration between conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt (1929-2016) and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe (COE), whose release this year marks the orchestra’s 40th anniversary. These recordings also trace the relationship between Harnoncourt and the Styriarte Festival, which began in 1987 and lasted for over 30 years

The COE became Harnoncourt’s orchestra of choice for classical music on modern instruments. He pioneered the exploration of a contemporary style with the Concentus Musicus Wien from the early 1950s, and then explored how modern instruments could respond in classical music by adapting to the style without having to change the instruments they played. Harnoncourt wanted players to take risks and perhaps fail, rather than play it safe. During rehearsals, he often told the performers that great music is always on the brink of disaster!

The COE’s double bass player, Enno Senft, said, “The name Nikolaus Harnoncourt is synonymous with bringing music of any era to life as if it were written today, and giving it lasting meaning for all listeners. The COE’s musical conviction embodies this very philosophy, and we have worked with Nicholas for decades to make this a reality. We are proud to have made his musical language a part of our unique style.”

The set offers remarkable examples of Harnoncourt’s new insights into his core repertoire – Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Brahms. All of these recordings are “live” performances, which add an extra level of spontaneity and atmosphere compared to studio recordings. The recordings have never been released before.

Luxuriously packaged in a clamshell box with individual sleeves and a 24-page booklet with rare photos and an essay by Simon Mundy, interspersed with anecdotes and memories of the concerts by COE players.
