Mercedes Sosa was the grande dame of Argentine music. Her strong, dark voice, as well as her talent for choosing the right words at the right time, made her a sought-after personality on stage and on the radio in the sixties. Born on July 9, 1935 in San Miguel de Tucumán, Sosa grew up in simple circumstances. Little Mercedes loved to dance and sang with inspiration, but without recognizing her talent as such. She was persuaded by enthusiastic friends to take part in her first competition at a local radio station in October 1950 The former listeners thanked her by helping her then current records to hit parade listings. Sosa returned the favor with concerts, tours, and new albums that almost without exception became box office hits. Even after years, her words still hit the moods of the people and so the coming generations also found their way to the serious, honest songs of the woman from the people. |
