In August 1961, the John Coltrane Quintet played an engagement at the legendary Village Gate in Greenwich Village, New York. Member of the group: the visionary multi-instrumentalist Eric Dolphy.

Ninety minutes of never-before-heard music by this group were recently discovered at the New York Public Library, shedding light on a musical partnership that ended far too soon.

In addition to familiar Coltrane material (“My Favourite Things,” “Impressions,” “Greensleeves”), there is an impressive feature for Eric Dolphy’s bass clarinet, “When Lights Are Low,” and the only known non-studio recording to date of Coltrane’s composition “Africa” from the famous “Africa / Brass” album.
