For the album ‘Pre-Bird’, which later also circulated for a while under the title ‘Mingus Revised’, Charles Mingus had recorded exclusively music composed before he had heard Charlie Parker for the first time. The recordings were made in May 1960 during sessions with two star-studded ensembles: a colorfully dazzling 25-piece orchestra and a more nimble tentet. In addition to six older compositions by Mingus, the program included two contrapuntal arrangements of pieces from the swing era. Verve Acoustic Sounds series: mastered entirely in analog by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound from the original tapes, QPR pressing (180 g), sturdy tip-on gatefold (Stoughton Printing), padded inner sleeve. |
