“There is more Spain in Offenbach’s brain than in Spain itself,” said a journalist enchanted by Maître Péronilla. Understandable, considering the charm and humour of this operetta, in which no less than twenty-two people are busy unraveling a ridiculously complicated love story. And the libretto is all the better because it was written by the composer himself. Castanets, tambourines and triangle cheerfully underline one of Offenbach’s last scores, which multiplies impressive vocal ensembles without renouncing intimate numbers of great poetry. Our world premiere recording features specialists of this repertoire such as Éric Huchet and Loïc Félix, but also unexpected opera singers – including Véronique Gens – who are audibly delighted to let themselves go in such cheerful company, supported by the talents of the Orchestre National de France and the Chœur de Radio France. 2 CDs + Book (Contents of the book in French and English) |
