Pandolfo, P: Improvised Prelude /Paolo Pandolfo

As one of the last great gamba virtuosos, Carl Friedrich Abel enjoyed enormous fame during his lifetime. Not only in his adopted country of England, but throughout Europe, he was appreciated both for his outstanding abilities as a gamba player and for the quality of his compositions. Paolo Pandolfo worked with a hand-picked ensemble when he recorded this exquisite selection of Abel’s gamba sonatas, some of which have only recently been rediscovered and are heard here for the first time. The artist adds his own cadenzas and ornaments. The result is a breathtaking and nuanced performance of virtuosity and sensitivity.
