The fact that the Russian late romantic was also a master of music for two pianos is hardly noticed. For decades the pianist Martha Argerich has been committed to their revival – especially with musician friends in the The annual Lugano Festival. Now the Rachmaninoff treasures from Lugano appear as a double album. The Rachmaninoff recordings for two pianos & four hands form a special chapter within the Lugano discography. In the years Created between 2003 and 2009, they document Martha Argerich alongside her young pianist colleagues Lilya Zilberstein, Gabriela Montero, Nelson Goerner and Alexander Mogilevsky. A late work are the symphonic dances, which Rachmaninoff transferred to two pianos after the orchestral version. The recording of the dances cannot be found on any Lugano documentary yet. Early works in Tchaikovsky’s succession are Rachmaninoff’s two suites for two pianos. The sound world of his homeland also occupied the composer in the rarely heard Russian Rhapsody, played here by Lilya Zilberstein and Alexander Mogilevsky. |
