In 2019 the Salzburg Festival presented a much acclaimed new production of Giuseppe Verdi’s historical drama “Simon Boccanegra”. The production was in the hands of Andreas Kriegenburg, who staged the play extremely clearly, transparently and with great attention to detail, and led the singers cautiously, but with the necessary character drawings, through the history of the corsair who became the Doge of Genoa. It sings and plays an absolutely world-class ensemble: Luca Salsi in the title role, René Pape as Fiesco and Marina Rebeka and Charles Castronovo as lovers Amelia and Gabriele Adorno make this performance an absolute listening pleasure. Under the baton of Valery Gergiev, the Vienna Philharmonic performs at the highest level. It sings the very well rehearsed Concert Association of the Vienna State Opera Chorus. |
