Premiere on DVD – Handel’s last italian Opera With Handel’s “Deidamia” Concerto Köln presents Georg Friedrich Handel’s last opera, which premiered in London on 10 January 1741. The little-known opera by the great baroque composer is based on an episode from the prehistory of the Trojan War. To protect Achilleus from certain death in war, he is hidden in girls’ clothes as Pyrrha in the palace of King Lykomedes. There the king’s daughter Deidamia falls in love with him. The confusion of love, jealousy and betrayal takes its course as Ulysses, King of Ithaca, also keeps an eye on the Scytan king’s daughter. With the new production of Handel’s opera “Deidamia”, Concerto Köln returns to the Amsterdam Opera on 15 March 2012 for a series of performances. This continues his successful guest performance in Amsterdam, which began brilliantly in 2009 with the rediscovery of Francesco Cavalli’s opera “L’Ercole amante”. As with the Amsterdam debut three years ago, the musical direction is in the hands of Ivor Bolton. The production will also be directed by David Alden. In the leading roles Sally Matthews sing as Deidamia, Olga Pasichnyk as Achille and Silvia Tro Santafé as Ulisse. Concerto Köln has stood for joy of discovery for more than 25 years: forgotten composers and lesser-known works by more well-known composers have experienced and are experiencing a renaissance through the renowned Kölner Klangkörper. Recorded live at the De Nederlandse Opera, March & April 2012. |
