I’ve always felt inspired by the physical and internal movement in dancing – whether with a partner or alone – and for me it represents another way of expressing myself. While researching potential repertoire for this album I found myself drawn to songs from a number of very different countries and peoples, all with strong dance elements – sometimes in the words, but invariably in the music. And movement here has a double meaning for me: these songs move me emotionally, and they contain the steps and rhythms of dance – many greatly varied kinds of dance – in their expressions of feeling and character. To me those two meanings interlink as one: they are the emotional and physical in unison – a single entity. It’s hard to imagine music without dance, or dance without music…“
