Russian-Soviet composer Georgi Vasilyevich Sviridov began his musical studies as a student of Shostakovich at the Leningrad Conservatory. He quickly emancipated himself from being a Shostakovich epigone to one of the most important vocal music composers in the Soviet Union. His catchy melodies and patriotic themes, indebted to Russian literature and folk tales, enjoyed great popularity. Sviridov’s undeniably conservative and popular approach did not prevent the country’s best conductors – among them Vladimir Fedoseev, Gennady Roshdestvensky, and Rudolf Barshai – from performing his works regularly. This selection of recordings of some of his best compositions includes purely orchestral works as well as vocal works for mixed choir or soloists. The album includes his best-known pieces “Triptych, Little Symphony,” “The Snowstorm – Musical Illustrations after Pushkin,” the symphonic suite from the film score “Time! Forward!” and “Night Clouds”, a cantata after Blok for choir a cappella. |
