Mozart was just 14 years old when he composed Mitridate, re di Ponto for performance in Milan. Despite his youth, it was a great success: the opera seria trumps with a sequence of breathtaking arias for the contrasting role characters. At the centre of the plot is Mitridate himself – that historical Mitridathus, King of Pontus, ruler of Greek-Persian origin, who was a formidable adversary of the Roman Empire. Marc Minkowski leads Les Musiciens du Louvre and seven virtuoso singers. Among them Michael Spyres in the title role of Mitridate. He is joined by a star trio of French sopranos in Sabine Devieilhe (Ismene), Julie Fuchs (Aspasia) and Elsa Dreisig (Sifare), as well as countertenor Paul-Antoine Bénos-Djian (Farnace), mezzo-soprano Adriana Bignani Lesca (Arbate) and tenor Cyrille Dubois (Marzio). |
