What does this man not have in his repertoire: chamber music from Bach to Ravel, from Mozart to Debussy, plus many a jazzy piece from the classical frontier and not to forget: the many virtuoso flute parts of the great orchestral works: Emmanuel Pahud, outstanding as a master flutist, now surprises his fans worldwide with music by Antonio Vivaldi. His partner is an ensemble with which Pahud has enjoyed the greatest successes as a soloist on the other side of the globe and with which he will also perform in German concert halls in May/June 2006: the Australian Chamber Orchestra Vivaldi was also inspired by wind instruments apart from the well-known violin concertos. Thus the flute concertos grouped under the opus number 10 form an absolute “must” in the repertoire of every flutist. The works are fascinating, especially as we encounter here Vivaldi’s special talent for capturing programmatic scenes in music: in the concerto “La Notte” (“The Night”), for example, “Fantasmi” (“Ghosts”) haunt the nocturnal lagoons of Vivaldi’s home city of Venice; in addition, the composer draws the picture of a sea storm and in a particularly famous concerto – “Il Gardellino” – eavesdrops on the goldfinch, whose call provides the concerto’s main motifs. Such splendour of themes and colours, compositional variety and splendid ideas leads to only one conclusion: the “Four Seasons” are getting competition! Reviews |
