Bach’s violin concertos are fundamentally different from the virtuoso concertos of the 19th century, which can be played in a much more subjective, sentimental and effective manner. But Bach’s most important virtues are absolute precision, logical phrasing and cooperation with the orchestra. The still very young American violinist Hilary Hahn brings all this to the table, and much more besides. She tackles the famous E major Concerto BWV 1042 with a temperament that had previously gone unnoticed, almost brash and powerful, while the orchestra (Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra) retreats discreetly into the background.

Reviews

“After excellent performances of classical-romantic standards, the still very young American Hilary Hahn is now finally establishing herself in the top league with Bach’s baroque “Master of Masters” bach’s baroque “Master of Masters”, the still young American Hilary Hahn finally establishes herself in the premier league spreading romantic boredom with too much overbinding or stammering nervously with spasmodically set-off notes. This has an inner logic and beautiful tonal stability reminiscent of the greats.” (stereoplay)

“Hilary Hahn knows what she wants. She sets the impulses with her clear, contoured, unveiled violin tone, but always unpretentiously, without artificial weightiness or virtuoso posturing and without degrading the orchestra to a lackey.especially in the sustained middle movements, she seems to come into her own, even if the deep intimacy and soulfulness that can only be expected from particularly gifted artists once they have reached a certain level of maturity is not quite her thing yet. But she is already on the way to becoming a great artistic personality.” (Teresa Pieschacón Raphael)

“For all her youthful innocence and joy of playing, she is an incredibly intelligent performer with a lot of team spirit, a true chamber musician who listens to her partners and frequently turns around to keep in touch with them. It creates a real duet with the concertmaster, the like of which I have never experienced before. And as for her bowing: has anyone ever heard a more precise or faster upstroke spiccato?” (The Independent)
