Albrecht Mayer has accompanied Mozart’s music almost all his life. Yet he has waited until now to release his first pure Mozart album. “Although most of the pieces on this album have been with me since my early youth, it is only now that I feel truly ready for their absolute depth of feeling,” says Mayer. Recorded with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and harpsichordist Vital Julian Frey, the oboist presents six arrangements for oboe, oboe d’amore or cor anglais, as well as a specially commissioned completed version of the fragmentary Oboe Concerto in F major K. 293

The heart of the album, besides the well-known “Exsultate Jubilate”, is the Double Concerto (originally for flute and harp), rewritten for oboe and harpsichord. One of the finest moments of the project, however, is the Ave verum corpus, a short motet written by the composer just six months before his death for Corpus Christi in June 1791. “‘Ave verum corpus’ is one of Mozart’s most famous pieces,” Mayer says. “I’ve known it for 48 years. It’s less than four minutes long, but it’s full of fine vocal lines. It’s like a little night music sung by the baritone of the English horn.” The album is completed by other musical gems, such as the concert arias “Non temer, amato bene” and “Ah se in ciel, benigne stelle”. Furthermore, the Concerto for Oboe and Orchestra in F major, which has only survived as a fragment, is heard in its completion by Gotthard Odermatt, a composer who has already worked closely with Albrecht Mayer in the past and composed commissioned works for him. The Rondo in C major (originally for violin and orchestra) and the touching Adagio from the Gran Partita will evoke a new listening experience in these new arrangements.

With “Mozart”, Mayer once again demonstrates the right feeling for a unique album programme and states: “My time for and with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart has come”.
