Artists Dean Parks, Larry Goldings, David Piltch, Jay Bellerose, Lee Thornburg, Scott Amendola Careless Love, first released in 2004, is a rich collection of cover versions of tunes from Bob Dylan to James P. Johnson and included Peyroux’s breakthrough rendition of Leonard Cohen’s Dance Me to the End of Love. For the only original on the album, producers Klein and Jesse Harris co-wrote Madeleine’s signature tune and many fans’ favorite, Don’t Wait Too Long. Selling half a million copies, the album brought Peyroux out of the exclusive jazz realm and into the mainstream arena, and it remains her most popular release Reviews R. Dombrowski in stereoplay 11/04: “The stereoplay CD of the month. “Careless Love” is at first glance an unspectacular vocal jazz album that draws the listener in as if by chance. This is initially fascinated by Peyroux’s matured voice, which has lost a little of its earlier tomboyishness, but at times sounds hauntingly fragile. She beguiles and ensnares, enchants rightly with a mixture of tiggend with a mixture of suffering, sentimentality and sultriness. Again the question arises where Peyroux takes this intensity from; the reference to her years as a street musician can partly explain this. The re repertoire ranges from Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen songs to classics from the thirties.” |
