Max Richter’s original soundtrack for Ari Folman’s documentary animated film Waltz with Bashir (2008) is of powerful intensity. It corresponds to the haunting images of a film about recent events and the psychology of trauma. The composition, which touched millions of people, contributed significantly to Richter’s remarkable success in contemporary music. Deutsche Grammophon is releasing the soundtrack as an international re-release on CD and the first release on LP on August 14. Waltz with Bashir premiered in Cannes in 2008, but it was not only the film that left a lasting impression on the critics, but also its soundtrack. “Embedded in Max Richter’s menacingly martial music, Waltz with Bashir combines a fearsome feeling of alienation with an equally alienated look,” wrote the Village Voice (New York). Richter’s work is an independent work, something that a soundtrack rarely achieves. The music won him the 2008 European Film Academy Prize for Best Composer as well as nominations for several other important prizes.
