The Big Screen trio joyfully explores the worlds of stage and screen, swinging through a selection of timeless tunes that enjoy universal appeal. Pianist David Newton, a heavyweight of British jazz, is joined on this project by Tom Farmer (of Empirical), who has a contemporary approach to bass playing, and Matt Skelton, whose virtuoso drumming skills ensure that everything runs smoothly. David Newton has always been enthusiastic about playing material that challenges his improvisations, and he has done his best to do so with this new trio. It is an emotional and instinctive joy to hear these tunes rendered with the care, intellect, passion and excellence that Big Screen brings to the music. Big Screen’s impressive line-up plays the music with a finely tuned sense of flavor and swing. The movie opens with a playful take on the movie theme “Bewitched”, most of the action takes place on the big screen, with “Heather On The Hill” conjuring images of Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse, while “When She Loved” from Toy Story 2 “Me” is haunting in its sheer simplicity. “Get Me To The Church On Time” from My Fair Lady offers a spectacularly successful interpretation by Oscar Peterson and Keith Jarrett, while “On The Street Where You Live” is a straightforward swing. Oscar Hammerstein is also well represented on this album with “Hello Young Lovers” and “Old Man River”, both popular pieces of film music history.
