Rhino adds Art Blakey and Thelonious Monk to its growing list of jazz titans spotlighted during Jazz Appreciation Month with the release of Jazz Messengers With Thelonious Monk Deluxe Edition. In March, new anniversary editions of Charles Mingus’ incredible albums (Mingus Three) and John Coltrane (My Favorite Things) were announced.

The vinyl version comes in a replica of the original sleeve that features photos from the era, including the cover image by Lee Friedlander, an award-winning photographer known for the portraits of jazz artists he shot for Atlantic Records in the 1950s. The deluxe edition CD and LP versions include a newly remastered version of the 1958 album and unreleased outtakes on disc two.

On May 14 and 15, 1957, Thelonious Monk recorded a one-off album with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers for Atlantic Records; it was Monk’s only appearance with the label. It was also his only recording with the Jazz Messengers, an ever-evolving collective led by drummer Art Blakey, who is joined on the album by Johnny Griffin on tenor saxophone, Bill Hardman on trumpet and bassist Spanky DeBrest.

Monk and Blakey recorded together frequently in the decade leading up to the 1957 sessions produced by Nesuhi Ertegun and recorded at Capitol Studios in New York. This bond makes the album a true meeting of the minds, a beautiful marriage of Monk’s melodies with Blakey’s unwavering sense of swing in outstanding versions of Monk originals like “In Walked Bud,” “I Mean You” and “Blue Monk.”

The collection is accompanied by an illustrated booklet with annotations by music historian, journalist and producer Ashley Khan. His text provides historical context on the artists and insightful commentary on their art. He notes, “Brilliant Corners” by Riverside and “Monk’s Music” are undeniably classic recordings from the same 1956-57 period, yet they were more about studio art and the introduction of new material. Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers With Thelonious Monk from Atlantic was also a studio album, but it’s bursting with energy, as befits a blow session that has all kinds of stuff in it.
