Since the early 2000s, Jazz Appreciation Month has been celebrated annually in April in the USA. Rhino / Parlophone are ringing in the festivities with one of the most influential figures in 20th century American music – Charles Mingus, who would have turned 100 on April 22, 2022 Reason enough to shine a spotlight on his legacy with the release of a deluxe edition of his album “Mingus Three.” Whether as a virtuoso bassist, celebrated pianist, bandleader or composer – the icon who died in 1979 shone in many roles

Mingus Three: Deluxe Edition will be released to coincide with Mingus’ birthday on April 22, 2022, and will be available as a double LP set (180g), double CD set, and download/stream. Music fans can look forward to an updated version of his 1957 trio recording with pianist Hampton Hawes and drummer Dannie Richmond, which, in addition to the seven original tracks, includes eight previously unreleased session recordings recently discovered by chance in the London Parlophone archives. These bonus tracks are alternate takes of all album tracks except “Laura” and two blues compositions.

Not only does the deluxe edition offer something for the ears, it is also a visual treat, from the replica of the original Jubilee Records record sleeve to the booklet, which includes photos from the period as well as new liner notes by jazz arranger and pianist Sy Johnson, who worked with Mingus in the 1970s and helped arrange his album “Let My Children Hear Music” (1972)

He writes, “The ‘Mingus Three’ session was booked for July 9, 1957. Mingus and Hawes brought their history to the studio: Mingus with his long, powerful history of activism, rebellion, and political attacks embedded in weighty musical activities, and Hawes’ fanfare of jazz awards and tremendous success – and how he could play!!! The meeting eventually became a dialogue between Mingus and Hawes, with accents by Richmond.”

Mingus recorded the session in one day with Hampton Hawes and Dannie Richmond – Hawes, who had played in bands with Charlie Parker and Dexter Gordon, he had known since childhood, and he worked with drummer Dannie Richmond for over two decades. The track listing of “Mingus Three” was composed of four standards (‘Yesterdays’, ‘I Can’t Get Started’, ‘Summertime’, ‘Laura’), two compositions by Mingus (‘Back Home Blues’, ‘Dizzy Moods’) and the joint jam ‘Hamp’s New Blues’.

The bonus material offers a fresh look at the main players and holds alternative – and not one bit less good – versions of album tracks, including peppy takes of ‘Summertime’ and ‘Hamp’s New Blues’.

A good 40 years after his passing, Charles Mingus’ music continues to inspire new generations of music fans, mediated also by contemporary artist:s such as the Mingus Big Band (led by his widow Sue Mingus), Kamasi Washington, Chrissie Hynde (whose latest album includes a Mingus cover), Candace Springs, Elvis Costello, Gang Starr (who sampled him) and Joni Mitchell (who wrote lyrics to his music). His musical legacy will live on in music history for many generations to come
