If the saxophonist Tubby Hayes, who died at an early age, had not worked primarily in Great Britain in the 1960s, where he is considered an idol in jazz circles today, his name would certainly be known worldwide. The Brit coaxed rousing modern jazz and elegant ballads from his saxophone and was always on a par with his American jazz colleagues. After Decca Records released a complete CD box set of the artist five years ago, the LP “Splonge! An Introduction To Tubby Hayes”, a compilation of the best and most important Tubby Hayes tracks compiled by filmmaker and author Mark Baxter. The printed inner sleeve of the 140g LP features lyrics and cover illustrations for all tracks. |
