Tenor saxophonist Tina Brooks (1932-1974) was only able to record five albums under his own name during his tragically short career. And only one of them was released during his lifetime: the masterpiece “True Blue”, published by Blue Note in 1960, with which Brooks delivered five striking original compositions between bebop, Latin jazz and cool grooving hardbop with an all-star quintet.

When Wayne Shorter recorded his groundbreaking debut for Blue Note with “Night Dreamer” in April 1964, he was still a member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, but already on his way to joining the Miles Davis Quintet. The album, which featured Shorter’s reworking of a Chinese folk song and five sublime, timeless originals, signaled the arrival of one of the most important saxophonists and composers in jazz history at the time.
