Between 1948 and 1958, the Jamaican-born trumpeter Dizzy Reece gained an outstanding reputation throughout Europe. After recording his debut album for Blue Note while still in London, he moved to New York – sponsored by Miles Davis and Sonny Rollins – to record three more albums for Alfred Lion’s label in a short time. The first of these albums was 1959’s “Star Bright,” a first-rate hard bop recording on which he was accompanied by four musicians who were all part of Miles’ illustrious circle at the time: tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Art Taylor. Although trumpeter Johnny Coles played on albums by Blue Note stars Herbie Hancock and Grant Green in the 1960s, he recorded only one album under his own name for the label: “Little Johnny C.” But this album had it all! For Coles could be heard here with original compositions and in the interplay with some of the most progressive musicians of that time: tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, alto saxophonist Leo Wright, pianist Duke Pearson, bassist Bob Cranshaw and drummers Walter Perkins and Pete La Roca. BLUE NOTE CLASSIC VINYL EDITION: Stereo, fully analog mastered by Kevin Gray from the original tapes, Optimal pressing (180 g), padded inner sleeve. |
