Saxophonist Sam Rivers had distinguished himself very early in his career by remarkable originality. After a brief interlude in Miles Davis’ second great quintet, Rivers recorded his debut album, “Fuchsia Swing Song,” for Blue Note in December 1964. The repertoire consisted of six compositions by Rivers that, while firmly rooted in post-bop and blues, could not deny the saxophonist’s avant-garde tendencies either. The highlight of the album is the stunning ballad “Beatrice,” which was later picked up and interpreted even by tenor giants Joe Henderson and Stan Getz. Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition: Stereo, fully analog mastered by Kevin Gray from the original tapes, Optimal pressing (180 g), padded inner sleeve. |
