Together with Chet Baker, Gerry Mulligan and Shelly Manne, alto saxophonist Art Pepper was considered one of the most important representatives of cool West Coast jazz in the 1950s. Pepper proved that his stylistic horizons extended far beyond this on numerous albums, not least on “Modern Art” in 1957, on which he and his quartet imaginatively spanned the spectrum from bebop to cool jazz to blues.
