“Live at the Village Vanguard” was the first official “live” album by saxophone virtuoso John Coltrane. Coltrane is joined here on two tracks by the wonderful Eric Dolphy on bass clarinet, as well as veteran accompanists McCoy Tyner on piano, Elvin Jones on drums, and Jimmy Garrison & ; Reggie Workman alternating on bass (both play together on “India,” one of three tracks from the same sessions added here as a bonus). Immediately following the Village performances, Trane and Dolphy embarked on a successful European tour.
