Ruzicka chose instrumental parts from his opera score as the setting for his Hölderlin Symphony. It begins with “Risonanza in simpatia” and “Die Vertreibung aus dem Paradies,” the two pieces that also open the stage work, one structured chorally and in verse, the other fleeting in shadow. With them, contrasts are exposed – in sound, in movement, in dynamics and in form. The composer found new nuances in the tone of his music. They stem, among other things, from a peculiarly fractured view of history, from transparency, the opening up and the groping forward of memory: history is not something finished, and not everything that it offered, for example in the transition to modernity, has been spiritually and artistically exhausted. Among other things, Ruzicka’s composing is based on this insight.

The chamber cantata MNEMOSYNE is based on a hymn in which Hölderlin invokes the mother of the muses and goddess of memory, consequently also the primordial mother of the arts. The three-part poem is one of the last great songs he wrote before he was committed to Autenrieth’s clinic and then to the tower room of the master carpenter Zimmer, that is, shortly before the border of the second half of his life.
