W. A. Mozart: Don Giovanni – Wiener Philharmoniker & Christoph Eschenbach

Of all people, the singer with the “archangel surname” gives here one of the most wicked, evil, cooked-up “Don Giovanni” portrayals in recent opera history. The production from the Salzburg Festival was called a “true sensation” (Frankfurter Rundschau), also an “ideal realization” (Neue Zürcher Zeitung).

With sex appeal and testosterone on the one hand, and a bass-baritone voice second to none, Ildebrando d’Arcangelo is more credible and convincing than many other “Don Giovanni” actors. Sven-Eric Bechtholf’s staging was praised as “aesthetic” and finds convincing solutions to the well-known stage problems posed by the Don Giovanni theme.
