With his Symphony No. 3, which he began in 1895 at Lake Attersee, Gustav Mahler creates his very own world view – from the origin of all life in the opening movement, to the plant kingdom in the second movement, to the human kingdom in the fourth, and up to the angels in the fifth movement. In the last movement, Mahler creates the divine. No other of his symphonies has so many statements survived as the third, which he himself describes as a guide to my sensations. And so the divine last movement develops as it says in the score Slow. Calm. Sensitive and conveys Blessed Confidence . Abbado has developed an almost elective relationship with Mahler’s Third. This recording of an acclaimed performance at the Lucerne Culture and Congress Center on August 19, 2007, captures the almost magical atmosphere created when Abbado succeeds in balancing emphasis and contemplation measure for measure and all the performers seem to rise above themselves. |
