Firmly rooted in African and Arab culture, ‘Fado’ was first sung by homesick Portuguese sailors in the 15th and 16th centuries. Sometimes it has been described as a cross between blues and opera. Generally praised as the voice of Portugal, Amália Rodrigues is one of the brightest singers of the 20th century.
Amália has made an immense contribution to the development of the ‘fado’, a genre originally introduced to translate the verses of the great Portuguese poets into music. Amália Rodrigues, “The Queen Of Fado”, is still an icon and an inspiration for other ‘fado’ and popular artists like Madredeus, Dulce Pontes, Mariza and Cristina Branco.
