Ludovic Morlot and the Seattle Symphony present passionate performances of two rarely recorded masterpieces by Morlots countryman, French composer Olivier Messiaen. One work celebrates Messiaens love for his wife, the other his commitment to his faith. Together they make up an album of sacred and transcendent beauty, showing the two sides of one of the most influential composers of the 20th century.

Reviews

BBC Music MagazineChristmas 2017

“In Poèmes pour mi, Jane Archibald’s soprano is full of rapture but never indulgent. The effect of ethereal boys’ voices, rather than women’s voices indicated by the score, is otherworldly. – 4 out of 5 stars

Gramophone MagazineOctober 2017

“[Archibald] is just right for Morlot’s unusually sleek and lithe interpretation. [She] soars rapturously in songs like ‘L’épouse’ and ‘Ta voix’, caressing the languorous phrases with exquisite tenderness…the boys sing beautifully throughout [Trois petites liturgies]…In both works, the Seattle Symphony show themselves to be thriving under Morlot’s scrupulous direction.

Sunday Times15th October 2017

“Morlot conducts his Seattle forces in two early Messiaen works that exert immense emotional power…The strings, piano and percussion are graced by Cynthia Millar’s mesmerising ondes Martenot.

The Guardian28th September 2017

“For a lesson in how to sing rapture without getting gushy or vague, try Jane Archibald’s performance of Messiaen’s ecstatic Poèmes pour Mi. Archibald delivers the cosmic vocal lines with stunning cool; she swirls and seduces but never overeggs it. Meanwhile conductor Ludovic Morlot does beautifully precise and evocative things with the Seattle Symphony. – 3 out of 5 stars
