Messiaen’s Des canyons aux étoiles was commissioned on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence, inspired by his travels through the magnificent landscapes of Utah, which impressed him so much with their beauty. With extraordinary instrumentation that includes a wind machine and a sand machine, the composer gives the music a unique texture that allows both the majestic landscape, its solitude, and the birds that inhabit it to take shape in the listener’s mind’s eye The piece is performed only irregularly, and although some remarkable sound recordings have appeared, only this one offers the rare opportunity to hear Des canyons from étoiles as a live recording, made as part of The Rest is Noise festival at London’s Southbank Centre. The London Philharmonic Orchestra and pianist Tzimon Barto perform here under the baton of Christoph Eschenbach, who, as an exceptional artistic phenomenon who captivates orchestra, soloists and audience, and is as convincing as a conductor as he is as a pianist, this year received one of Germany’s most prestigious cultural awards in the form of the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize Eschenbach is an expert on 20th and 21st century compositions and is fully in his element here; the same is true of Tzimon Barto, who once again inspires in this piece with his spectacular dexterity and subtle contrasts of emphatic power and delicate sensibility. Soloists from the orchestra also make an appearance, but it is ultimately the close interplay between conductor, soloist and orchestra that overwhelms in its entirety and illustrates the enormous perspectives of the music. |
