A studio recording produced in 1986 has surfaced in the WDR archives, which has never been released. The then chief conductor Gary Bertini knows how to come up with an exceptionally good cast

Countless authors have taken up the material, in all possible forms – as fairy tales, stories, novels, dramas, operas. The most famous musical theatre versions include the opera Ariane et Barbe-Bleue by Paul Dukas and the opera Duke Bluebeard’s Castle by Béla Bartók

The view of Bluebeard and his last wife has changed considerably in the more than three centuries since Perrault’s fairy tale was published in Paris in 1697. An examination of the “battle of the sexes” was presented by Paul Dukas as early as 1907, setting to music a model by the Belgian writer Maurice Maeterlinck. The result met with great and envious acclaim, especially among fellow composers and musicians. Vincent d’Indy said that “Ariane” was the most important music-dramatic work after Wagner; Karol Szymanowski, Ferruccio Busoni and Bruno Walter considered “Ariane et Barbe-Bleue” to be the most important French opera alongside Debussy’s “Pelleas et Melisande”
