Like Norma, the role of Leonora in Il trovatore demands considerable vocal and dramatic weight in addition to bel canto finesse; Callas, however, had sung it only about twenty times. With this recording – in which the soprano, Fedora Barbieri, Giuseppe di Stefano, and Roland Panerai unite to form an impressive quartet of leading players – she bid a final farewell to this role and to Herbert von Karajan. |
